Drug rehab receives a lot of media attention when celebrities are seen going to rehab. But away from the media spotlight what exactly happens in rehab? Read on to learn more.

Drug Rehab and Different Levels of Care

There is a range of levels of care offered by addictions treatment centers (rehab centers). Not all provide all of these services. These include:

Detox

  • Medically-assisted detox usually lasts from less than a week to two weeks. It provides a supportive way of withdrawing from substances and preparing to begin treatment.

Outpatient (IOP)

  • An Intensive Outpatient Program helps those who cannot attend residential treatment or who don’t need it. Outpatient care can provide an excellent option. You participate on a regular schedule, typically 3-4 hours per day every day for a defined period of time. It offers individual therapy, group counseling and exposure therapy. There may be some holistic therapy options such as art, drama, yoga etc.

Residential

  • This is a full-time, live-in setting for those with severe addiction and/or co-occurring mental health disorders and who require a structured environment to recover. They offer a wide range of individual and group services including those offered in Outpatient care and more, but in a supportive residential setting. Residents receive round-the-clock monitoring, evidence-based therapy (individual and group) and selected holistic options.

Partial Hospitalization (PHP)

  • For some people requiring to be hospitalized but who are transitioning to the community, this option offers structured, intensive mental health treatment programs for those with a serious mental health or substance use disorder. A PHP provides a variety of mental health services all in the same place, including individual therapy, skills training, and medication management.

Aftercare/Alumni

  • This program follows any of the others offering ongoing peer support, group counseling and in some cases 24/7 phone or chat support. The primary goal is to support healthy sober living and help prevent relapse.

  • Beach day

  • Hiking
  • Music-making
  • Gym
  • Gardening
  • Improv skits
  • Others as interests may suggest

H2: How Long Does Rehab Take?

The length of time for rehab varies greatly with the individual. There are several elements to this, as follows.

Detox: The general guidance for the acute phase of withdrawal from these substances is:

  • Alcohol: 3-7 days
  • Benzos: 14 days
  • Cocaine: 4-7 days
  • Methamphetamines: 3-10 days
  • Methadone: A lengthy process of approximately 12 weeks. There can be less craving and withdrawal discomfort with slower tapering.
  • Opioids (Heroin and Fentanyl):  14 days

Inpatient Rehab: Inpatient residential treatment varies with the individual and the center. Typically it’s for a minimum of 30 days with 90 days recommended as optimum.

Outpatient Rehab: This is an option for those who either don’t need or don’t want to continue with an inpatient programme. It may last several months to a year.

Aftercare: Aftercare or alumni programs vary with the rehab center. For some this may be 6 months to a year with close follow up, check-ins and group counseling. For others it is a lifelong engagement with support group meetings.
