Dual-Diagnosis/ Co-Occurring Disorder Treatment

These two terms describe a person who is struggling with addiction and addictive behaviors. The co-occurring issues are likely to include addiction and other mental health related disorders like depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder with the often common link being past and present traumas underneath it all. The Encino Recovery and Detox Center specializes in ‘seeing’ men and women who are in pain, underneath their behaviors, labels and diagnosis.

Counseling

Behavioral therapies for addiction are very effective in helping people modify their attitudes and behaviors related to drug use, increase healthy life skills, and help them stick with their medication, therapy and support systems. Some examples include:

  • cognitive behavioral therapy, which helps modify the patient’s drug use expectations and behaviors, and effectively manage triggers and stress

  • contingency management, which uses a voucher-based system giving client’s “points” based on negative drug tests. They can use the points to earn items that encourage healthy living

  • Motivational interviewing, which is a patient-centered counseling style that addresses a patient’s mixed feelings to change

These behavioral treatment approaches have proven most effective, especially when used along with medicines. Please call The Encino Recovery and Detox Center and let one of our admissions experts help you find a path to help, health and wellness.

The Encino Recovery and Detox Center combines innovative models of care with time-tested and new innovative methods, which is why our community of clients and families are genuinely appreciative of what we do.

We begin with an understanding that each client and family are unique, and we customize our services to arrive at the best results. Each client is provided an individual therapist and a dedicated case manager to help our clients through the process, beginning to end. Our duty doesn’t stop when a client leaves our center – we provide a number of aftercare services to increase sustained attachments, recovery, health and wellness.

Some men and women who are struggling with addiction and addictive behaviors are not aware of the underlying reasons for developing an addiction. What we do know is that addiction and addictive behaviors quiet emotions and thoughts and conceal grief, loss and wounding from the past. We also know that concealing ones pain, regardless of its roots will bring no remedy, relief or freedom.

Trauma and the lingering emotional damage are often times managed by engaging in addictive behaviors to survive and to avoid or minimize the painful memories of the past. Deeper than any physical reminder or scars from abuse is the emotional damage that is inflicted. Feelings of worthlessness, despair, anger, depression and anxiety are all long-term psychological consequences of trauma.

At The Encino Recovery and Detox Center, we help our clients find value and relief in addressing the pain underneath addiction and addictive behaviors. Healing from the long-term wounds of trauma will not only empower, but it will also lessen the unwanted and undeserving burden of lingering emotional pain.

Talking it out, versus acting it out, will generally lead to substantially less destructive behavior and increase ones psychological, relational, physical health and wellness. In reducing the emotional pain, our clients gain a stronger foundation and experience a much better chance of sustained sobriety, healthy connections and can find peace.

MAT, Neurophysiology and Psychology

Addiction can be seen as a wheel with three main spokes: binge/intoxication, abstinence/negative emotions, and worries/anticipation (anxiety). The last stage worsens with time and causes neuroplastic changes in the reward center of the brain, stress, and executive function symptoms. Our Medical Director, Dr. Jayson Hymes, MD is an expert in helping his clients by safely combining advancements in neurophysiology, technology, psychopharmacology and psychology.

Understanding the brain and the reward systems impacted by drug use allows us to treat the brain of those struggling with addiction as well as working on the complex psychological, relational and environmental consequences of clients. The treatment team at The Encino Recovery and Detox Center best supports the ‘whole person’ model of care by combining MAT, Neurophysiology and Psychology.

In addition to treating substance use addiction for drugs and alcohol, the therapies offered are also effective for managing symptoms related to anxiety, depression, chronic pain, ADHD, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and other mental health issues.
