Accelerating Recovery with Dual Diagnosis Treatment

We understand that addiction is often used to cope with trauma and  underlying mental health problems. Our dual diagnosis program provides individualized treatment plans for specific mental health needs.

The Connection Between Substance Abuse & Mental Health Disorders

There is a strong connection between mental health and substance abuse. Around 37% of individuals who struggle with substance abuse also have a mental illness. There are a number of factors that can contribute to this co-morbidity.

  • People with mental health problems may be more likely to self-medicate in order to cope with the emotional pain they are experiencing. This can lead to higher rates of substance abuse.
  • Genetics and family history of substance abuse & mental illness may make some individuals naturally more vulnerable to developing co-morbid problems.
  • Social stigma of people with mental health disorders can cause them to isolate and increase the risk of substance abuse issues.
  • Chemical imbalances in the brain caused by mental health problems can be further exacerbated by drug use. This can cause a cycle of symptoms that make it harder to both treat mental health problems and  substance abuse issues.

Some of the co-occuring mental health problems we treat include:

  • Clinical Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Mood Disorders
  • Personality Disorders
  • Trauma (PTSD & Complex PTSD)
