We Work With Most Major Insurance Companies

There is a wide range of therapeutic settings used in the treatment of addiction (Substance Use Disorder). They vary in type of facility, therapy and duration. Choosing the right one is a big decision that can set you on a path to recovery. To learn more, read on.

Outpatient

Low to Medium Intensity

Clients continue to live at home while attending less than 9 hours of treatment a week at a special facility. This may be at a substance use treatment center, community health clinic, hospital-affiliated clinic, or other facility. Evening and weekend programs are also offered so you can still go to school or work.

It usually includes once- or twice-weekly individual, group or family counseling as well as other services. Programs can vary from walk-in methadone maintenance treatment to drug-free approaches. Patients should have some support systems in place such as adequate living arrangements, transportation and high motivation to attend consistently. Walk-in care is used for primary intervention as well as extended aftercare and follow-up.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Also known as Partial Hospitalization (PHP) in some states, you can attend 10-20 hours (minimum of 9) of intensive treatment a week at a special facility while continuing to live at home. Typically this is for 3-8 hours a day, 5 to 7 days a week. This may be at a substance use treatment center, community health clinic, hospital-affiliated clinic, or other facility. Evening and weekend programs are also offered, as well as daycare in some places,  so you can still go to school or work.

This option is suitable for those who:

  • Are in early stages of treatment
  • Are transitioning from residential or hospital settings
  • Have not been successful in outpatient treatment
  • Have co-occurring medical or mental health conditions.

IOP/PHP is suitable for patients who do not need full-time supervision and have some support but need more structure than is available in some other outpatient settings. The frequency and duration is usually tapered as patients demonstrate progress, less risk of relapse and a stronger reliance on drug-free community supports.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

In this medium to high intensity structured program you can attend 4-8 hours of treatment a day (20 or more a week) while continuing to live at home. This form of day treatment can also be appropriate if you have co-occurring medical or mental health conditions.

Residential (Rehab)

This program provides live-in treatment in a residential setting and can last from 30-90 days. Residential programs are designed for those with significant substance use problems and who lack sufficient motivation or social support to stay abstinent on their own but don’t meet clinical criteria for hospitalization. Many provide medically supervised detox but who don’t need other medical care.

Typically residents go through different phases as they progress through the program. You will receive supervised treatment and structured care plans to help overcome your addiction.

24/7 monitoring may be available. This program may be followed by outpatient rehab.

These facilities range in intensity and duration of care from long-term, self-contained communities to less supervised halfway and quarter way houses from which residents are transitioning back into the community. There are specialized residential programs for adolescents, pregnant or postpartum women and their dependent children, those within the criminal justice system and others.

Inpatient

This is a high intensity program provided in specialty units in hospitals or medical clinics. These are typically used if you have serious mental health conditions or disorders. It provides round-the-clock treatment and supervision by a multidisciplinary staff that emphasizes medical management of detox or other medical and psychiatric crises, usually for a short period of time.

In general hospital care is usually restricted to patients with severe overdose, severe withdrawal symptoms, acute conditions that could complicate withdrawal, co-occurring psychiatric conditions, acute substance dependence and a history of nonresponse to less intense forms of treatment.

Medications for Addiction Treatment (MAT)

If you have a physical dependency on certain substances such as alcohol, nicotine and opioids, medications may be combined with counseling and other treatment services.

Recovery Treatment Support

Most facilities offer a range of treatment services, including:

Medication

  • These are used to discourage continuing substance use, suppress withdrawal symptoms, block or diminish euphoric effects and cravings, replace an illegal drug with a prescribed medication or treat co-occurring mental health conditions

Psychosocial or Psychological Interventions

  • These modify destructive interpersonal feelings, attitudes and behaviors through individual, group, marital or family therapy

Behavioral Therapies

  • These improve, change or remove undesirable behaviors and encourage desired ones

Self-Help Groups

  • These provide mutual support and encouragement to become or remain abstinent, before, during and after treatment
